The first thing to consider in designing an island for your kitchen is it's desired chief function. Is it to be a cooking space, a food preparation space, a place with storage? Do you want to incorporate seating space, room for the kids to hang out when eating snacks or doing homework? Factor your answers to such questions into your design in order to find the island that works best for your family.
If you have recently installed a kitchen island, have a portable island on wheels or are thinking about doing a major remodel to add an island, you want to give serious consideration to kitchen island lighting. The type of kitchen island lighting you use depends on the kitchen you have, its style and the shape of the kitchen and island in general.
Kitchen islands are the hottest new kitchen trend. If you are looking to remodel your kitchen, you should consider incorporating one into your design. Preparing meals becomes so much easier because an island provides extra counter and storage space. If you are not interested in remodeling your kitchen but would like to purchase an island anyway, you need to make sure that you have enough space. Ideally, you will have an L-shaped kitchen that is at least 100 square feet. This configuration ensures that you have room for an island and its addition will not make your space too crowded. I do not recommend adding a permanent island to smaller U-shaped or "corridor" kitchens. There simply is not enough space, but a rolling kitchen cart is always an option.
Some interesting additions to kitchen islands that I have seen include wine refrigerators, wine racks, pet feeding stations, trash compactors, or a prep sink. Wine refrigerators are special refrigerators that are programmed to stay at a certain temperature that is perfect for wine storage. The refrigerator is often equipped with racks so that you can store as much wine as possible in the space provided. Prep sinks are small sinks that are equipped with a garbage disposal. They are not meant for cleaning dishes but rather for washing produce and disposing of the refuse from cutting or preparing food for cooking.
Decorating the island with utensils or products goes along the same lines as the appliances. Don't just use any old kitchen products to place on the counter. Things like a spice rack, decorative containers and baskets are a great idea for the kitchen island. Some other items you may consider are napkin or paper towel holders and canisters of dried goods such as sugar and flour. Just be sure that you don't throw everything on the island and use it as a catch all. It should still be neatly organized.
