Once things are fresh and covered, dig into your kitchen drawers. This is often one of the most disorganized parts of a kitchen because people think nobody looks in their drawers other than those using them. However, even if this is true, using disorganized drawers adds to stress and frustration when cooking. Everyone knows how annoying it is to reach into a drawer while cooking three of four items on the stove, only to see a giant mess and no whisk, spatula or stirring spoon. Use drawer organizers to divide items into categories and if you feel like there are no organizers that suit your needs, make your own.
Around our home, we believe parents do their kids a disservice if they're not given the responsibility of contributing to the household through chores. Kids that never have to lift a dirty sock or clear their place after dinner grow up to be selfish and expect the world at large to tend to their every whim. That's indulgent and impractical. On the other hand, kids that are given responsibility at an early age for tasks well within their capabilities learn to appreciate the work which goes into running a home. Those kids are more likely to appreciate the effort put into making a meal. Clean clothes in the closet don't just appear; someone had to wash, dry, sort and hang them.
Your kitchen storage space requirements depend upon your cooking and shopping habits, the size of the household and your individual lifestyle. If stored items are organised, then finding and accessing them becomes much easier and quicker. Our youngest kids can't tackle a full dishwasher or the laundry just yet. But they are old enough to put away the silverware and manage their underwear and sock drawer. I placed a couple of drawer organizers in our large kitchen drawers and used a permanent marker to draw an outline of each utensil type inside each slot. Now the kids can follow the simple code and put away the silverware into the drawer organizers without any help from me. I think they've even made it into a game, to see who can finish first.
Try using drawer organizers to contain what you want in each drawer. These always work well for your silverware but they are great for holding those pens and pencils too. Sort through your spoons, spatulas, tongs etc. and ask yourself if your using them and how often? You may find that you have duplicate items but you only use a select few that are your favorites. Categorize and group together different utensils that you need but don't use every day. Take for example a garlic press, can opener, egg slicer, specialty knives for cheese and vegetables etc. Knowing that you keep these items together will make them easier to find when they are needed.
