Kitchen islands have gone from a "nice to have" to a "must have" in kitchens throughout the country. Not only are they a sign of a nicely appointed kitchen, but they add valuable workspace to the kitchen - allowing families to easily gather together to create meals and spend time with one another.
Kitchen islands are the hottest new kitchen trend. If you are looking to remodel your kitchen, you should consider incorporating one into your design. Preparing meals becomes so much easier because an island provides extra counter and storage space. If you are not interested in remodeling your kitchen but would like to purchase an island anyway, you need to make sure that you have enough space. Ideally, you will have an L-shaped kitchen that is at least 100 square feet. This configuration ensures that you have room for an island and its addition will not make your space too crowded. I do not recommend adding a permanent island to smaller U-shaped or "corridor" kitchens. There simply is not enough space, but a rolling kitchen cart is always an option.
Due to the popularity of islands, there is now much more choice available and they come in a wide variety of styles, as well as having a number of options when it comes to kitchen accessories. An island can consist of a solid countertop surface, or it can incorporate a sink, your cooking appliances as well as other useful kitchen accessories.
