The first thing to consider in designing an island for your kitchen is it's desired chief function. Is it to be a cooking space, a food preparation space, a place with storage? Do you want to incorporate seating space, room for the kids to hang out when eating snacks or doing homework? Factor your answers to such questions into your design in order to find the island that works best for your family.
Portable kitchen islands or carts are just as useful. You want to make sure that ones you look at have heavy duty, locking rubber wheels to keep your island in place especially if you plan to use it for chopping vegetables. There are also islands with drop-leaf extensions giving you more counter space when you need it, but making it easier to store later. Towel bars, spice racks, and paper towel holders are just a few of the many options you have with a portable kitchen cart.
Depending on the size of the island, it may be easy to turn it into a sitting area for the family. Add a few stools around the island and clean off the top of it so that the family can sit around and enjoy meals at the table. This is a great alternative if you don't have a kitchen table in the room or if you only have a formal dining table in the house. It offers a convenient space that can be utilized in the best way possible. You can even choose to set the island with placemats if you want to add even more style to the room.
